Ears Wide Open: He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister – the band built around Lemon Sun frontman Rob Kolar and his thespian sister Rachel – is as much about the spectacle as the songs. Costumed, crazy and even a little bit cartoonish, the Kolars – joined in the core group by tap-dancer Lauren Brown and delightfully mad cellist Satya Bhabha – deliver their folk-pop ditties with vaudevillian zeal, injecting a dose of showmanship into an indie scene sometimes stifled by its own seriousness. Their forthcoming residency at the Satellite is built around the theme of “Escape” – the quartet (augmented by lap steel player Aaron Robinson, upright bassist Oliver Newell and drummer Patrick Joseph) will be supported by a burlesque troupe on opening night (although we’d much rather just hear special guest Mia Doi Todd sing), and they’ll be giving away USB flash drives with music, video and photos at the merch table.
