Download: The Elected, ‘Babyface’

So the story goes that Blake Sennett was retired from music, his baggage heavy from a decade’s worth of work with Rilo Kiley and two albums of material from his own band the Elected. A friend got him off the schneid, back in the studio, and, boom, we have “Bury Me in My Rings” (out Tuesday), the Elected’s third album. Made with the Elected’s co-founder Mike Bloom (who, keeping it in the Rilo Kiley family, has his own solo album coming out in June on Pierre de Reeder’s new label Little Record Co.) and producer/multi-instrumentalist Mike Mogis, “Bury Me in My Rings” is evidence Sennett’s songwriting tank is far from dry. “Babyface,” “Born to Love You” and “When I’m Gone” are only a little crackle and hiss away from AM radio, and the former child actor stretches his elastic tenor to give his ditties a touch of white-boy soul, both in the catchy dance-pop numbers and the arching ballads. Lovelorn entreaties framed by shiny melodies – it works, all the way down to the ukulele.
