Ears Wide Open: Ximena Sariñana

“You’re no different from me / No matter the language we speak,” Ximena Sariñana sings on her first English-language single, “Different,” which, owing to its nifty production, horns and even a little whistling, is sticky as syrup. Sariñana, the Guadalajara-born songwriter and actress, allows as how she’s “from a different world,” but by the time her self-titled, English-language debut comes out on Aug. 2, she could rule the planet. The daughter of Mexican filmmaker Fernando Sariñana and screenwriter Carolina Rivera, the 25-year-old already earned two Latin Grammy nominations in 2008 for her album “Mediocre,” and for a long time has done an intriguing job of straddling two musical worlds – pop (i.e., her Spanish version of “Lucky” with Jason Mraz) and indie (she has sung with the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group). She made her forthcoming album with Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, the Bird and the Bee), Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Natalia Lafourcade, and, just off a tour with Sara Bareilles, has upcoming dates scheduled with Fitz & the Tantrums and Ray Lamontagne. In these early songs, there’s quirky and refreshing frankness that marks Sariñana as a keeper.
