Ears Wide Open: Barbie Hatch

0

Barbie Hatch may sound familiar if you’re a fan of the hip-hop group N.A.S.A., which consists of members Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon. She’s mostly known for her vocals on the duo’s track “Way Down,” which also featured Wu-Tang’s RZA and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante. Her contributions also led to the opportunity to provide vocals for them on tour during the last two years. However, 2011 is the year she breaks free from the restraints of hip-hop hooks and stretches her sound by way of her debut, “Hypertrophic Heart.” The album is slated for a release on June 28 via Spectrophonic Sound, home to N.A.S.A and Squeak E. Clean – who, in fact, introduced her to producers Brent Nichols and Koool G. Murder. Without scratching the surface, her lead single “Stars” may remind you of electro-pop singer Annie. But unlike the Norwegian artist, Hatch’s solo sound has fewer sugary synth lines, and the guitars and percussion present a tougher resonance any Mattel doll would ever dare to be paired with.
