Video: Mia Doi Todd, ‘All My City’

Anybody who noticed Mia Doi Todd before her set Saturday at the Silver Lake Jubilee had to be taken by her calm. While a noisy dance-pop finished up its set on the Sunset Stage, Todd sat placidly on a folding chair in the backstage area, looking a wavy-haired Mona Lisa amid all the commotion. She was so … zen. It’s a quality exuded by her music (yes, released on City Zen Records), which for nine albums has offered striking intimacy, rich subtlety and, if you listen to much of anything else at all, shelter from the storm. The 35-year-old’s ninth album “Cosmic Ocean Ship” came out last week, and fans of “Manzanita” (2005) and “Gea” (2008) will be drawn to her sonic and psychic explorations. Jessica Sanders’ new video (which premiered Monday on Spinner) captures the pastoral beauty and conceptual dichotomies of “All My City,” which, with “My Baby Lives in Paris” and “Under the Sun,” stand out in a Jonathan Wilson-produced collection that at times is almost too plaintive for its own good.
