Video: Spindrift, ‘Space Vixens Theme’

Ever since they set about stirring desert twang, spacey electronics and reverb-drenched textures into an Ennio Morricone-like dust storm. Spindrift has been most cinematic band around, even when your imagination provides the only visuals. The latest psychedelic excursion from songwriter Kirpatrick Thomas and friends is titled “Classic Soundtracks Vol. 1,” with each track getting a video or trailer treatment featured on IFC.com. The ambitious project has yielded some out-there work to accompany Spindrift’s out-there compositions. “When I Was Free” salutes obscure photographer and Mojave-dweller Stanley Sanger. “Legend of the Widower Colby Wallace” was written for director Burke Roberts’ film of that name. And “Space Vixens Theme” (above) reconstititutes the trailer for the J.X. Williams dud “Space Vixens.” “Classic Soundtracks” conjures up plenty of vivid images even without its accompanying visuals, but it’s intriguing to actually see what the songwriter was writing for.  Next up is “Hellbound,” a tune written for the title sequence of the forthcoming film “Dust Up.” The video gets an L.A. premiere at Spindrift’s show on Thursday night.
