Dunes certainly runs in the hip circles – their iPhone video for “Tied Together” (released as a 7-inch on Teenage Teardrops) features cameos from members of No Age, Vivian Girls, Abe Vigoda, Telepathe, Shannon and the Clams and other denizens of the L.A. underground. Not unlike the metaphor in the song and the video, the music made by the L.A. trio of Katelyn Hall (Mika Miko), Mark Greshowak and Stephanie Chan is a tangle of melody and effects – it’s been labeled no-fi and post-punk, but it might be more accurate to say post- (or pre-) pop. Like their previous releases for the Mexican Summer and Art Fag imprints, “Tied Together” is a pretty soul, in shackles and locked in a padded room, squirming to free itself from tormentors who need less, not more, rope.
