PJ Harvey won the Mercury Prize last night for her eighth album “Let England Shake,” beating out the likes of Adele, James Blake and Elbow and becoming the first artist to win the award twice. “I feel surprised and astonished that I’ve won twice and I do feel proud, it’s amazing,” she said afterward. “I can’t quite take it in but at the same time I feel that making music and words is very important to me and I’ve always tried to make it the best it could possibly be and I hope to continue doing that.” Excellent piece here in the Guardian, which called Harvey “a cultural treasure.”
‣ On the local tip, Filter’s Culture Collide festival, expanded from 2010’s inaugural to five days (Oct. 5-9) this year over eight venues (plus a street festival on Sunday, Oct. 9), announced a special edition of Chris Douridas’ “School Night” on Oct. 7 that includes Avi Buffalo, the Postelles, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister and WIM. That show will be at the ReForm Academy (1815 Sunset Blvd.) in Echo Park. Set times haven’t been announced yet, but check out the poster the lineup and venue list. Hard to believe that all-access wristbands are going for only $20 right now.
‣ Veteran ’80s hitmakers Berlin (featuring Terri Nunn) have been added as the Sunday headliner for Lobsterfest (Sept. 16-18 at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro), which already includes a good roster of local bands.
