Modern Time Machines’ don’t make songs as much as they make dervishes, swirling blasts of guitar that sound as if they’ve been picked up by a bold Santa Ana wind and, circular melodies and featherweight vocals intact, deposited in your consciousness like a slap on the ears. The quartet of Ben Golomb, Dean Estella, Satu Makeda and Joshua Daudert follow in the footsteps of a long line of L.A. shoegazers and noisemeisters – Silversun Pickups and Medicine are the most obvious references – and imbue their loud/soft dynamic with plenty of crunch. Their debut album “Continuity Girl,” made with studio hands Josiah Mazzaschi and Steven Rhodes, was a long time coming; “Dweeb,” for instance, is straight outta 2009. Fans who’ve followed Modern Time Machines’ gradual development on the indie scene will find it worth the wait.
