Premiere: Crown Plaza, ‘Frontside’

2

It’s no big shock running into a Los Angeles musician at the Austin airport after South by Southwest closes down its week of festivities. It was a surprise on Monday, however, to see one hard at work. There, seated on the floor minding his laptop, was So Many Wizards frontman Nima Kazerouni, and he wasn’t checking email, either. He was working in Logic, putting the finishing touches on the first song from his side project Crown Plaza. It’s appropriate that Kazerouni (pictured above at the 2010 Silver Lake Jubilee) completed the track at Gate 23 at ATX – he calls the project “airport-inspired electronic breakup music,” owing to the fact he’s taken up residence in a room in the headquarters of a rental car company owned by his father. The space, near LAX, affords him a wondrous view – of the Crowne Plaza. On the trippy, reverb-drenched debut track “Frontside,” you can almost hear the takeoffs and landings.
