The Newbury Park quintet the Neighbourhood launched its stealth campaign a couple months ago in the U.K. when the irresistible single “Female Robbery” hit Zane Lowe’s show on Radio One. The band didn’t release any biographical information but teased that more music would be on the way.
This past weekend, the equally swoon-worthy “Sweater Weather” – a sweetly romantic, indie R&B anthem dusted with a hip-hop lite verse – was also debuted by Lowe.
It turns out the man behind the youthful croon is 20-year-old Jesse James Rutherford, who as a kid did some acting and as of two years ago had a hip-hop band called the Good Boys. Here, Rutherford and his soulful longing aim high, tenderly capturing love in its glorious small moments. The “Sweater Weather” video is the work of Daniel Iglesias Jr. and Zack Sekuler, in collaboration with I Versus Eye and photographer Justin Bettman. It’s as dreamy as the song – the second in a row from a band that has materialized out of nowhere to stake claim to spots in my Best of 2012 list. Get intoxicated.
