Before there were Bon Iver and Megafaun, there was a band featuring Justin Vernon called DeYarmond Edison, which was founded in Wisconsin and relocated to North Carolina in 2005. Chris Porterfield stayed behind, and now more than six years later and with his former bandmates having won acclaim for their projects, Porterfield has resurfaced under the moniker Field Report. The first two cuts from his forthcoming self-titled album indicate that the long incubation period for his music was time well-spent. Recorded in Vernon’s April Base studio and produced by Paul Kolderie (Pixies, Radiohead, Warren Zevon), songs aptly titled “I Am Not Waiting Anymore” are intimately stripped down to showcase his finger-picking and earnest vocals. “Fergus Falls,” however, takes the cake when the naked intro leads into a gorgeous build-up full of harmonies and warm instrumentation. “Field Report” is slated for a release date this July.
