The debut EP from L.A. quartet the Child, released on Manimal Vinyl, is fashionably arty – and probably a bit heavier on the fashion than actual art. The brainchild of singer-guitarist-keyboardist Holly Marilyn, along with singer-keyboardist Lauren White, bassist Peter White and drummer Norm Block, the Child deals in moody, percussive avant-pop. The synth-heavy, melodic “Faster” is probably the co-ed band’s strongest calling card, bringing to mind a host of ’80s and ’90s songstresses, all tougher than “The President” tries to be. The EP bears a lot of familiar fingerprints – Zander Schloss, Big Black Delta’s Jonathan Bates, the Lonely Trees’ Christian Stone and even a touch of She Wants Revenge’s Justin Warfield. Rich Ragsdale’s video for “The President” sets the tone in bold fashion.
