The first new music in 2 1/2 years from L.A.-based art-pop trio the Controversy comes by way of the posterized, art-damaged video for “Dirt,” a hypnotic electronic excursion to the dark side. The band — singer-keyboardist Laura Vall, guitarist-vocalist Thomas Hjorth and keyboardist-vocalist Amy White — earned notice for their 2015 album “Don’t Count on Me,” which included the rapturous singles “Queen of Chinatown” and “Two Voices.” The new single, produced by the band along with Dave Russell and Thomas Ross Johansen and part of a forthcoming EP, negotiates the twisted circuitry of emotions, steadied by snapping percussion, then warped by vaporous synths. It’s available free for a limited time on Bandcamp.
