Ears Wide Open: The Singularity

Julian Shah-Tayler may be one of many who has dared to make the move to Los Angeles for its the sunny weather and attitude, but there’s nothing wrong with that.  Especially when that newfound love with California serves as a filter for music that ends up with a similarly bright disposition. However Shah-Tayler, who made the move from Leeds, England, to L.A. before forming his band the Singularity three years ago, also possesses a voice that was made to ride the dark undertones of new wave. With help from Trent Baronn II, Denise George, Cathy Hue, Chris Lopez and Sunny Malick, heavy electro-rock songs predictably cushioning his tenor course throughout the Singularity’s self-titled debut. But songs like “Talking in Your Sleep” and “Come Undone” pleasantly peek out for a couple of moments which flirt via buoyant ’80s radio-pop melodies. If the sun continues to rub off on Shah-Tayler, the Singularity may not be something to fear anymore. People are still able to avoid technology today, but you can’t always get away from hummable hooks – and why would one want to?
