Ears Wide Open: The Distnce

The first three singles from the Distnce bely the name – they are slightly chilled (but not over-saturated) dream-pop, to be sure, but they exude a melodic warmth that often gets lost in the genre’s reverb. The man behind the project goes by the name James Lucas, whose real name is a Marc Jameson, a producer/programmer who has works with the likes of Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Matt & Kim and Kelly Osbourne. Forsaking the computer during the songwriting process, Jameson penned the tunes on piano. The fluttering electronics behind the tuneful simplicity in “Dry Land” speak to the duality behind the Distnce’s vowel-challenged moniker: that even in the sprawl that is Los Angeles, we feel a sense of isolation.
