Ears Wide Open: Digital Noise Academy

1

So much talent, so little time. That’s kind of the story behind supergroup Digital Noise Academy, a long-in-the-works studio project helmed, more or less, by rocker/producer Ken Andrews (Failure, On, Year of the Rabbit). When Andrews first told me about DNA, it was late 2008, and he and his collaborators already had a substantial batch of music completed. What they did not have were the time and resources to commit to being a “band,” or to get the music out there. In fact, the collaborative nature of DNA made it impossible to even get the principals in one place for a band photo (hence, the artwork above). And DNA boasts quite a roster: Besides Andrews, there are Sharky Laguana (Creeper Lagoon), Charlotte Martin (herself), Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Nine Inch Nails, Beck, Air, M83), Fernando Sanchez (Lenka, Ben Jelen, Rachael Yamagata, Chris Cornell) and Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star, Sam Roberts). Now the group has launched a Kickstarter campaign to finance the band and its release – it’s pricier than your average fan-funded effort, but so is the talent. If you’re familiar with the music of DNA’s various contributors, you won’t be surprised by the arena-ready sound of their electro-charged, atmospheric songs. Martin’s voice is used to perfect effect on the single “Melting Inside” … which is what you imagine these musicians did in the melting pot of Andrews’ studio.
