Ears Wide Open: ESP

Call it intuition, but I knew exactly what ESP was going to sound like as soon as I saw the L.A. trio’s photograph. Cinematic production. Featherweight vocals. Vaguely tribal beats. More synths than songs. It all adds up to opaque dreamscapes at the hands of keyboard-wielding brother-sister duo Aska and Seiya Matsumiya and drummer Bobby Evans, whose self-titled debut EP comes out Tuesday. It’s certainly the kind of music that appeals to visual artists. The new video for “Serenade” (after the jump) is the work of Alexandra Pelly and is an homage Yellow Magic Orchestra (to video-check a song that’s more than 30 years old). The early ’80s, revisited.
