Son of Stan (featuring Jenny O), “Nite and Day” – Something about this one made us smile. Son of Stan – that’s the solo project of Jordan Richardson (Ben Harper’s drummer), who is working with producer Adam Lasus on a full-length album – revisits the New Jack Swing era, enlisting some vocal assistance from Jenny O on Al B. Sure!’s 1988 hit. Jenny O has her own buzz, and compared to her solo material “Nite and Day” is kinda, well, night and day.

A House for Lions, “What’s Love Got to Do With It” (email required) – The L.A. quartet has been pounding the pavement trying to finance the making of their debut album (if you haven’t seen them hitting up children to be financial backers, it’s a hoot). In the meantime, singer Daniel Norman and crew do an oozy version of the song made a hit in 1984 by Tina Turner.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich, “Midnight City” and “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” (email required) – From across the pond come these two outings from the U.K. singer-songwriter, who released his very good debut album “Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm” last year. He brings a nice intimacy to M83’s “Midnight City;” not so much with the Frightened Rabbit anthem, which was made for Scott Hutchison’s vocals. Leftwich visits the Bootleg Bar on Nov. 9.
