[Here are few covers that have crossed our radar and enjoyed…]

Writer, “Disparate Youth (Santigold cover)” – Scuzzy punk brothers Jame and Andy Ralph of San Diego’s Writer take on Santigold’s pop song. The guitar stabs are still there, but they’re just drowned in fuzz and drone this time around. You can watch the E. Lee Smith-directed animated video here. Smith also directed the video for their track “Hot Days,” which is from the album slated for a release on Oct. 30 via 3 Syllables.

Atlas Genius, “Islands (the xx cover)” – Australian band Atlas Genius, comprised of brothers Keith, Steven, and Michael Jeffery and their pal Darren Sell, takes on the xx’s wildly popular tune “Islands” by stripping the haunting ballad down to an acoustic version. The funny thing about this minimalistic rendition is that it sounds brighter than the original. Atlas Genius will release a full-length debut in Winter 2013.

Calvin Love, “Gut Feeling (Devo cover)” – As an ode to a raucous trip to the infamous Hollywood Park Racetrack and Casino to see Devo back in 2010, Calvin Love (who we introduced in September) covers Devo’s “Gut Feeling” and gives it a lo-fi electro-pop vibe. It’s simultaneously a new spin on a classic and a throwback to bedroom recordings. Calvin Love’s debut “New Radar” is out Nov. 6 on Autumn Tone Records.
