Premiere: Seven Saturdays, ‘One in 3’

Jonathan Haskell’s gripping instrumental compositions as Seven Saturdays are the stuff of epic movie soundtracks, or of hours lost in ambient bliss imagining them. Since releasing his “Love in the Time of Anticipated Defeat” album and “Secret Things” EP, both in March 2011, Haskell has done a bunch of remixes while setting off in a new direction for his own music: incorporating vocals into his songs. For Seven Saturdays’ forthcoming full-length, Haskell invited a host of collaborators who lend their voices – Rain Phoenix (Papercranes), Rachel Stolte (Great Northern), Alex Lilly (Obi Best), Vanessa Fernandez (Octover), Jim Evens (Helen Stellar), Genevieve Artadi (Pollyn) and Jacqueline Santillan (Wait.Think.Fast).

He explains: “Occasionally, instrumental music can feel detached, even when it’s over-the-top emotive and at the peak of a Mogwai encore, or in the valleys of a Boards of Canada love-making sonic plunge. And one thing I noticed when recording songs like ”˜The Shallow End’ or ”˜Secret Things,’ from previous albums, was that the minute a human voice is introduced into the recording, I felt more of a connection to the music.” Daniel Farris produced the new album, due in 2013, and Colin Stetson, Matt Rollings, Dan Schwartz and Jerry Marotta lends their skills as well. On the new song “One in 3,” Evens’ vocals are featured.
