Sometimes misfortune can lead you down unexpected paths. So it was with singer-songwriter Brandi Emma, whom we last spotted aiding and abetting Charlie Clark on his new EP. During a time she was injured and not able to play guitar, Emma found herself hanging out with friends Steven Evanne Heinstein and Thomas Schobel in Schobel’s studio, sharing drinks and yucks over videos from ’80s. One drum loop led to another, and the Fox Must Pay was born. The trio’s debut EP “Xtraordinary Things” is a brooding and propulsive excursion into ’80s dance-pop, five songs that trace the arc of a relationship. Not quite like Emma’s 2010 EP of confessionals did, mind you, but fuel for listeners’ love machines nonetheless, the ones running at disco speed.
