Who: Dropkick Murphys at the main stage
In 3 or Fewer Words: Erin go braugh!
Memorable Because: The Dropkick Murphys dodged any criticism of being a Pogues facsimile when they invited the original Celtic punk band’s accordion player James Fearnley on stage for the final third of their excellent set. It’s tough to pick a favorite anthem from a performance that had everyone as far back as the sound booth jumping and jigging, but “Rose Tattoo” is as good as any. (And yes, they played “I’m Shipped Up to Boston,” aka “the song from ”˜The Departed’”.) It seems the veteran act has shed any insecurities about their influences, though dedicating a song to Boston Red Sox fans was laying it on a bit thick. Hardcore Celtic punk in the sun at peak heat sounds like a terrible idea on paper, but it was good enough to chance heatstroke. Oi! Oi! Oi!
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At Allen Stone: Soul music from Oregon? Hmm … yeah, sure.
