For his second album “Watching Movies With The Sound Off,” out this week on Rostrum Records, Mac Miller brought in production assistance from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Diplo, Clams Casino, Earl Sweatshirt, Flying Lotus and The Alchemist. The Pittsburgh rapper also produced a third of the album himself, under his alias Larry Fisherman, including the apropos-yet-ridiculously titled “Suplexes Inside Of Complexes And Duplexes.” Over a hazy and erratic beat that features the amazing and far too absent Jay Electronica, they each deliver a verse as if battling in an intricate rhyme-off. Mac fronts his loveable stoner side, rhymes “young sire” with “Jon Cryer,” interrupts his verse for a brief coughing interlude, and spits, “I’m sick of being too nice to people who don’t do sh*t but consume light / Told myself, ”˜F*ck the world kid, just do what you like.’” Jay utilizes his deep, smooth, and ever-changing style, paints a “Wizard of Oz” metaphor, rhymes “parabolic” with “Ecclesiastes,” and leaves us with “I keep my sh*t crispy and elegant / so miss me with the irrelevant” before hushing his flow to a whisper like he’s quietly slipping out the back door. The fun they’re having with their wordplay is equally as fun to listen to.
