Ears Wide Open: Cassandra Violet

CassandraViolet

When she isn’t teaching her English class in Boyle Heights, Cassandra Violet picks up a different tool of influence, her guitar. The L.A. native put herself on the map in 2012 with her folk release, “November.” The graceful six-song EP featured intricate string arrangements to complement Cassandra’s fragile vocals and intimate lyrics. Her newest song “Game of Pretend” swaps her Joni Mitchell style for a richly textured sound. Following the carefree, honest attitude and poignancy of Regina Spektor, Violet picks up the energy for a buoyant calypso backbone. Recorded in one take, the song simply features a looping machine and Cassandra’s excellent harmonic pitch. In an attempt to promote her fan-funded campaign for an upcoming music video, she teamed up with director Ignatius Fischer to produce a window into Cassandra’s chamber pop direction.
