Spectacular Spectacular

Most of Spectacular Spectacular’s press clippings have revolved around Isley Reust’s rising profile in the transgender community. Reust, who blogged about her transition on YouTube, has appeared on “Glee” and Laura Jane Grace’s “True Trans” series, among other exploits (a film is in the works). None of which should obfuscate the lush, dreamy statement that is “Blur,” Spectacular Spectacular’s debut album. Reust and bandmates Jessica De Grasse and Millie Chan have created a long-player that mixes pristine acoustic guitar and orchestral arrangements with varying doses of electronic sheen, all framing the trio’s pastoral harmonies. Far from a one-note slab of reverie, though, “Blur” reveals myriad influences. The first single “Orange Juice,” released last fall, was a pulsing piece of dark disco. And “Saturday Night” whiplashes between sighing folk-pop and electrifying pop-punk. Vulnerable? Yes. Aggressive? That too. It is but one of many dualities that play out on “Blur,” which will be released June 30.
