Ears Wide Open: French Negative

French Negative

It’s all about having the right level of anxiety, right? The first song from the forthcoming EP by French Negative references the Yerkes-Dodson Law, the psychological premise that measures the relationship between stress and performance. Says David Schaefer, the multi-instrumentalist behind French Negative: “People who are too anxious won’t accomplish anything, but neither will those who aren’t anxious enough.” Recording in the Pehrspace with drummer Ellington Peet, Schaefer has accomplished something — the first French Negative EP. The pair, who met while they played in a band called Huxley Anne with Harmony Tividad of Girlpool, enlisted the production help of David Jerkovich and Danny Nogueiras of No Win, and the EP features contributions from Phoebe Bridgers (vocals) and Diego Gaeta (Wurlitzer). “Yerkes-Dodson” is a raw-boned indie-rock volley that’s perfectly DIY. Go ahead, be a little bit nervous.
