Somewhere here there’s one of those drummer jokes. We’re not gonna make it. But if you’re Stephen Edelstein, and you’ve paid your dues behind the kit for bands like Caught a Ghost and He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, and you’ve got the hair, beard, sense of humor and songwriting chops to do your own thing, you name your “band” Sexy Jesus and you run with it. Which is what Edelstein has done. He explains his inspiration thusly: “If I want to play rock and roll drums, if I want to play as many fills as I want, if I want to have a prime spot at the front of the stage, then I gotta write my own songs and sing them too.” And so Sexy Jesus will bless the world with his “Make It Big” EP (release date TBA). The debut single “Samantha’s Song” is eminently likable psychedelic blues, done with a slacker smile and the bemused countenance of a man who’s watched all hell break loose from the back of the stage. In director Nick Nakahara’s Sexy Jesus finds there are many fishes in the sea, but only one Samantha. Treat it as gospel.
