L.A.-based Gallant (first name: Chris) has followed up last year’s “Zebra” EP with the minimalist stunner “Weight in Gold,” again showcasing his celestial vocals and quickly becoming the It Guy of alt-R&B. Gallant has also collaborated with producer Steven Zhu, aka ZHU (who earned a Grammy nomination for 2014’s dance track “Faded”) on “Testarossa Music” — all of which has stoked the fires for a more substantial release from Gallant. In the meantime, he’s touring the U.S. as the opener for Sufjan Stevens, and director Tyler Sobel-Mason’s video for “Weight in Gold” flickers, then smolders, then burns, then rages as Gallant belts out his desire in the upper registers. Racking up millions of streams online, “Weight in Gold” is another of what figures to a string of high notes for the young singer.
