Video: Banks, ‘Better’

Why have a regular girl, when you can have one dipped in gold? That is the visual question posed in the “Better” video by Orange County-born singer Banks. It’s been a whole 13 months since Banks put out new music, aside from appearances on songs with Chet Faker (“1998”) and Tala (“Wolfpack”). After her debut album “Goddess” garnered her some love last year, expectations are high for this artist to give the people something juicy. What she delivers on “Better” is provocative, moody and amorphous, much like the bodies curving through darkness in the video. Whereas her previous output received comparison to Aaliyah meets Fiona Apple meets Lauryn Hill meets brooding R&B (a la tourmates The Weeknd), her yearning vocalizations in this tune reach an otherworldly climax that is all Banks. Pick her up off the floor and believe her, she can love you better. She can!
