Vowws

“Councillor” is the third single from industrial pop duo Vowws‘ debut album on Cleopatra Records, “The Great Sun,” which came out Oct. 30. Recorded in New York City during a stint between leaving Australia and moving to Los Angeles, Matt and Rizz honed their sound with producer Kevin McMahon, whom they describe as a “mad scientist.” Although McMahon had never recorded electronic music, “knowing what he’d done with Swans, we knew it would work well,” the band posts on their website. “We experimented in different ways to give the machines personality and made them sound warm, physical and dynamic. It was recorded to tape and made to be played LOUD.” For all the wide-eye mugging, trench-coat flaring, glitching VHS bedroom gloom, once again Vowws shows a penchant for having fun in their videos (see the karaoke-inspired video for “The Great Sun,”), posturing and air-punching their way through this catchy song about the “romanticizing of authority and old-school hierarchy.” They wanted it to feel like a video that would air on MTV in the early days. Mission accomplished, it’s as if we just walked into a rehearsal in their living room. Black eye shadow, check. Drum machine, check. Cool posters on the wall, obviously. The best is when they bounce in unison singing, “Councillor, you’re stained, you’re stained …”
