Burnt Palms

Seaside grunge-pop band Burnt Palms have a new album coming out tomorrow, Feb. 5, on We Were Never Boring, a label that splits its base between San Francisco and Italy. The band’s third full-length, “Back On My Wall” finds singer-guitarist Christina Riley working out her angst through distortion, while Clara Nieto smacks the pain away on drums and bassist Brian Dela Cruz and guitarist Joshua Vazquez keep things crunching at rising fever pace. Riley delivers her words calmly, while the music rages through riffs, a style pleasantly reminiscent of early 1990s girl-fronted rock bands that blended unaffected vocals, catchy melodies, and pissed-off instruments. To get the right balance of sweet and rough, the band relied on engineer Gary Olson of ’90s indie band Ladybug Transistor, whose production credits include Jens Lekman, Crystal Stilts, and Frankie Rose.
