Dreamy yet complex, Chris Cohen’s music is like eating a flavorful burrito. Every bite reveals and highlights a new mouth-watering ingredient. “As If Apart” doesn’t waste any time grabbing attention with a rhythmic shuffle then suddenly blooms into a heady layered cosmic trip that about half-way through gets momentarily overtaken by elephants ice-skating in a vacuum. Soon we’re thrust into a dense kaleidoscope while Cohen does math on the microphone, then the whole thing crescendos and disappears, as if it were never there to begin with and we’re left where we started. What a cool ride, mellow yet commanding and mysterious. Cohen, who has collaborated or played with Deerhoof, Cass McCombs and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, released his new album “As If Apart” via Captured Tracks on May 6.
