Xander Singh has come out the other side. The founding member of Pepper Rabbit (2008-11) and keyboardist in Passion Pit (2012-14) had hit rock bottom after a tailspin that included debilitating health problems, and relationship woes on top of that. In 2015, he was on the physical and spiritual mend, engaging musician friends to talk shop on his podcast, while slowly working on the tunes that would become his solo debut, “Muffin.” On Dec. 16, more that two years after a neck injury and the ensuing pain (eventually resulting in neck and spinal fusion surgery) forced him to leave Passion Pit, his solo album will be released via Hit City U.S.A. “Making this record took a lot out of me, and I couldn’t be happier than for it to leave my hands and fall into yours,” says Singh, who last week unveiled the first and final songs on the album, both of which exhibit his affection for fidgety, experimental synth-pop. “Turn Off My Love” is an emotional cleanse; “As Long As You’re Loved” is an R&B song on caffeine, trapped in a funhouse of bent notes.
