Spencer Berger describes the new Auditorium album, “The First Music,” as “a hunt for answers to unanswerable questions,” and so far the videos live up to the mystery he pursued during 200 days spent alone in his apartment, layering instruments and his opera-trained vocals together while crafting the record, his first release since 2012. The “Fire Fire Ocean Liner” video is a companion piece to the “Mt Moriah” video, both directed by Ben Barnes. Where that one built suspense through darkness, children in masks observing something going on through a window, this one does it in full-color and blood. It’s a little bit gross, beware, but the intrigue is well worth that queasy feeling. Paired with the lyrics of “Fire Fire Ocean Liner,” it seems the unsettling feeling of disgust and fear experienced from looking at this gaping open sore festered with moths is the metaphor linking the visual with his words — which carry a sentiment about our political times “rock and rollers, raise your hands, the president wants to join your band, he’s only played for a year or two but he’s already so much better than you …”

The album will be released on Jan. 27, 2017.
