On his way to Coachella, Canada’s gap-toothed, self-proclaimed “jizz jazzer” Mac DeMarco announced a surprise show at the Echo on Wednesday night. Tickets went on sale day-of at 3 p.m. and sold out immediately. DeMarco’s fans huddled closely for over two hours after lining up for a couple hours and when the band took the stage, they screeched and hollered as DeMarco grinned from ear to ear.

The set was a space for testing out new songs and fans surged with each new track. When DeMarco played any oldie, between reinforcing all the cat-calls from his hangers-on, fans mindlessly shoved, surfed, and swayed themselves into a sweaty frenzy. DeMarco’s brand of indie-pop with off-kilter jazz nuances and general impishness is all his own and with his goofy character and switching dad hats with audience members, he continues on as the man-child prince of slackerdom. His everyman stardom paves way for fans to not only be welcomed to jump on stage but to end up on the shoulders of DeMarco, too. At the end of the night, after trading jokes about “pants-shitting” fun with his fans, DeMarco clung to the beams above his audience like a monkey and then fell into arms of total pants-shitting abandon.

Mac DeMarco was supported by Australian musician Kirin J. Callinan and comedian Pierce Mcgarry.
