Crystales

“‘Boring’ is a boring song about breaking up and making up and regret, inspired by the sweet, sad-sap style of Brian Wilson,” says songwriter/guitarist Nick Gil of the latest Crystales track. But it’s not a boring song, with distorted and jangly guitar riffs floating over a wall of sound like seaweed drifting on the swell. Named after the glass cathedral in Orange County, the L.A. shoegaze-pop band formed in 2012. It’s a family affair, with brothers Nick and Billy Gil on guitars, their cousin Tony Infante playing bass and their neighbor Jason Hanakeawe on lead vocals and drums. Their output includes two digital 7-inches and 2015’s self-titled EP, recorded by Alex DeGroot (Zola Jesus). A new batch of songs, including “Boring,” were recorded by Joel Jerome (Dios) in Highland Park and will appear on an album sometime this year.
