Stream: Sure Sure, ‘Friends’

Amid the clattering drums and treacly piano on the new Sure Sure single “Friends,” there’s a broken-hearted love song, the kind about falling for somebody who wants to hold you at arm’s length when you want a full embrace. The quartet of Chris Beachy, Kevin Farzad, Charlie Glick and Michael Coleman turn those emotions inside out with a bright, stuttery track that somehow makes “screaming at the traffic / feeling lovesick” an act of unadulterated joy. The single is the latest left-field pop offering from the quartet formerly known as Jr., who released a string of singles last year and followed up in February by releasing their cover of the Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place.” “Friends” is out this week.
