Drama is something at which Jesse Rutherford excels. As frontman of the Neighbourhood, Rutherford embodied modern electro-soul in all its atmospheric bombast and angst. (There’s even some acting in his background.) Two Neighbourhood albums, a mixtape and four EPs later (including one of the latter as a surprise release last month), Rutherford is detouring to release a solo album. Last week the Newbury Park-reared artist unveiled the single “Born to Be Blonde,” following it today with “Drama” — and the news that a solo album, titled “&,” would be out Nov. 10. The album announcement notes that production credits include Dylan Brady, Lars Stalfors, MD$ and Alex Leone and Take A Daytrip. As for “Drama,” it’s a likable slow-burner with a organ outro that makes you wish it went on a few more minutes. Oh, and after years of seeing Rutherford in black-and-white (The Neighbourhood adopted that color motif early on), there are color photographs of the 26-year-old. His hair is indeed blond.
