Songwriter/composer Gregory Uhlmann plays guitar for indie sophisticates Fell Runner (new album in the works, they say) and early this year released his solo debut “Odd Job,” a collection of chamber-pop orbiting the worlds of artist such as Nick Drake, Andrew Bird and Sufjan Stevens. His latest solo venture involved a lot of email. While in New York, he met the brass quartet the Westerlies, who have collaborated with Fleet Foxes, Vieux Farke Toure and Dave Douglas besides releasing two acclaimed albums of their own. For the new song “Little Sur,” Uhlmann recorded the original guitar parts in his native Chicago, and then swapped sound files between Los Angeles and New York. Tim Carr (Haim) co-produced, with Cari Stevens adding vocals and Anna Butterss playing bass. The result: a fragile, woozy waltz for watching the ocean and feeling its pull. A clean getaway, made gently.
