On Jan. 12, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club will release “Wrong Creatures” via Vagrant Records, their eighth studio album since 1998. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Nick Launay (Nick Cave, Arcade Fire), it’s their first release since drummer Leah Shapiro’s recovery after brain surgery for a Chiari Malformation. Where the album’s first single, “Little Thing Gone Wild” comes in hard and punchy, “Echo” takes a more sprawling atmospheric approach, a wave of space noise churning as the song builds to crescendo. It’s more of an uplifting track, in contrast to the dark moodiness of another album single, “Question Of Faith.” Varying in noise, mood and intensity, each of these occupies a distinct signature of BRMC’s gutsy rock ā€™nā€™ roll sound, a testament to their longevity. “We are truly an island ā€” come hell or high water,” says bassist Robert Levon Been, “so it’s usually best to dress accordingly. Though I’m not sure what the proper attire is when drowning in fire. But leather usually goes with everything.”
