Friends since middle school, Livvy Bennett, Dylan Hill and Michael Hunter brought their self-proclaimed “genre-fluid” band Mamalarky from Austin to find a new home in Los Angeles. Combining Bennett’s predilection for indie-pop songwriting, Hunter’s jazz approach to keys and drummer Hill’s appetite for heavy psych, the trio have crafted a debut EP, “Fundamental Thrive Hive,” telling tales of first love, friendship, self-acceptance and band bonding. On “Much Better,” the final track of the EP (which came out last week), Bennett sounds fed up with her circumstances, singing  “I would be so rich if melancholy could switch to monetary gain hey I’m a millionaire …” whilst the music tempers her agitation in a dreamy pattern of elements keeping step with the shuffling drum rhythm.
