Simone White’s voice has been likened to air (often preceded by “lighter than”), but her new single “Tiny Drop” has been appropriated to take up the cause of water — specifically, Earth’s water.

The video by director Ronan MacRory (“Mono,” “Mississippi Requiem”) was made for the United Nations World Oceans Day 2018 (June 8) and offers poignant reminders about the limitations of our natural resources. It’s powerful, though a little bit of a stretch from the song’s original intent.

“It’s an anti-war song I wrote in an informal session in L.A. with producer Pete Min,” explains White, the Echo Park-based singer-songwriter who has released three full-lengths, as well as last year’s “Genuine Fake,” a 17-song collection of stripped-down versions of songs from those albums. The violin on “Tiny Drop” (available on Bandcamp) comes courtesy of Andrew Bird, who played on White’s last studio album and for whom she has opened many times. Chris Dave plays drums and Kaveh Rastegar bass.

“We’re all tiny drops that make up the world,” White says. “Every small action you make affects the whole. Everything you vibrate contributes, however small and insignificant you feel, it makes a difference. Vote. Speak truth. Allow yourself to love and be loved. Carry a reusable jar around instead of another effin to-go cup.”

It’s a delicate song for a delicate planet, and there could hardly be a voice more perfect than White’s to remind us all, “You are a tiny drop.”
