Future Feats is not necessarily a synth band, but the latest from the quartet fronted by North Carolina-born, L.A.-based Josh Quinn — a collaboration with producer Justin Warfield (She Wants Revenge) — is the morning shot of a retro-’80s espresso you didn’t realize you needed to shake your life awake.

“Keep Up” starts heavy with low bass and high guitar riffs that straddle opposing sides in tandem, and the tune comes together when a driving disco beat (on real drums) begins and Quinn introduces the push and pull scenario that sets up one’s heart getting unexpectedly stolen. It all comes together when the synths kick in with the chorus, “And you say / Don’t sleep / You had my heart pumpin’ to your beat / Get your shit together / Keep up / Keep up with my love.”

“The point is,” he said in a Facebook post introducing the song, “Don’t let your life lead you … Lead your own life … Rush into things … Fall in love … Make mistakes. However, just be prepared to ‘get your sh!t together’ when you find reality waiting comfortably back at the starting line.”

This wake-up call is out now via Fader Label.
