L.A. local gig-goers in the know have seen Hawk Percival and Friends (Autumn “Hawk” Percival on rhythm guitar and vocals, Dylan Rodrigue on lead guitar, Greg Fleitshut also on lead guitar as well as keys, Shere Disraeli on bass and Amit Gilad on drums) soar onstage while rocking their live shows. Taking their time to steadily build their following since playing last year’s Chinatown Summer Nights, they’ve now released their first two singles of 2019, “Low,” a psychedelic mood swing pleading for the return of a lost love if only just to stem the intense burn of loneliness, and “Night Moods.”
As Percival laments in the former, “You wanted all of me but I wanted more,” she and the band shred out a wall of sound that pulls down old memories and shatters them across the floor. The songwriter shares that the inspiration for the tune arose “while watching ‘The Princess Bride,’ one of my favorite movies. It’s about finally coming to terms with the pain from losing your lover. Like Princess Buttercup, I stayed in denial for a long time, running away from my emotions and filling my time with other lovers. ‘Low’ is the moment where everything hits you and all you can do is release … and pray you can get them back.” Rom-coms aside, the pain is real and “Low” shows you can turn grief into fire. Turn this, “as you wish,” up to 11.
