Low Hum’s debut album “Room to Breathe” is space-rock for a universe of sharp angles and no comfort zones. Mastermind Collin Desha, the Hawaii native who made the album in his home studio with drummer-producer Jules de Gasperis, sends listeners hurtling through sonic galaxies with the pedal to the metal — or, at least, with a lead foot on the distortion pedal.
With the album on the horizon and Low Hum holding down the Monday night residency this month at the Echo, we asked Desha the obvious question about his influences and whether he had any of them stashed in a playlist. Were we in for a surprise. It turns out the singer-songwriter-guitarist is an inveterate maker of playlists and that their songs are more creative stimulants than direct lines to his own music.
“Songs I’m Hummin’ To” is Low Hum’s “weekly dose of things that are currently influencing me,” Desha says. “It’s a little bit of old stuff, new stuff and friends who are in the neighborhood that I continue to be inspired by. When working on records I actually stop listening to music because I usually drain my ears and need to give them a break. But I’ve taken recently a small break from writing and I love making new playlists to plant seeds for my future tunes.
“P.S. I’ll probably never make a playlist that doesn’t have some early Bob Marley tracks in it.”
