Cheer Up Club

Cheer Up Club are an L.A. band who combine the wry, slacker spirit of the ’90s with the goofball, ADD-addled antics of millennials. Maybe the the later phenomenon is the natural progression of the first, but either way, it sounds like the quartet is having fun.

The band — singer-guitarist Ethan Goodman, drummer Nathan Espinoza, bassist Will Gardner and keyboardist Hannah Stone — will release their debut album, “Get Physical,” on May 24. As they advertise, artists such as Buzzcocks and Pavement are reference points for their mash of indie styles, all undertaken with the requisite insouciance. Not that they are outright silly; they cover serious topical matter such as mental health, sexuality and politics on the album. They just aren’t strident about it.

Which brings us to the video for “Geezer,” directed by Olivia Shapiro. It starts with group therapy and breakfast. It ends with balloons and hugs. It’s a fun introduction to a band most likely to cut your hair.
