Anthony Polcino — aka Antoine Diligent, a nickname he earned for his work ethic — has a long resumé as a band member (Low Vs Diamond, Beat Club), sideman (Blondfire) and collaborator (WORLDS). His solo explorations have often taken a backseat. Under the name Soft Pipes, he released an album and EP of pretty heady psych-pop back in 2010, and the songs on the 2016 debut album from Antoine Diligent, “Futurisms,” seemed ready for a Tame Impala or Unknown Mortal Orchestra support tour.
His latest collection of existential angst wrapped in guitar effects is “La Forma,” due to be released later this year. “If ‘Futurisms’ sounded like it came from some anachronistic dystopian ‘Blade Runner’ version of a city like L.A., ‘La Forma’ is from that same time and place — but after you’ve gotten out of the city for a long weekend,” he says.
The first single is the swirling “Nobody Loves U (WYL)” … the “when you’re lost” part making it so true it hurts.
“It’s an homage to the time in between the everyday hustle… the flip side of one’s outward image,” Polcino says. “Home life, personal motivations, inner conflicts, just being, etc. The stuff seemingly no one wants to hear about, especially these days. The title similarities to John Lennon’s ‘Nobody Loves You (When You’re Down and Out)’ are genuinely coincidental, but I’m of course fine with the fact he was the one who said it first. I updated it for shorter attention spans.”
