Geena Fontanella is an L.A.-based singer-songwriter who as a session vocalist and songwriter has worked in a lot of styles, including country, jazz and folk. After spending some time in Nashville, the Riverside native is back in Southern California and turning her talents toward indie-pop, with impressive results.

On “Trip,” the second the single from her forthcoming EP “Head Space,” Fontanella uses her bold, versatile vocals to engage in some audacious truth-telling. Over an insistent beat that seems to hammer home her point, she playfully reminds you to mind your words, lest you “trip, trip, trip, trip, trip over yourself.” It’s a lecture, only really catchy.

“A lot of people tend to speak before they think; myself included,” the songwriter says. “‘Trip’ is about calling people out when they think they know everything. We all know those people.”

The EP is a collaboration with producer MacGregor Leo, and it’s not the first Fontanella has forayed into pop. She’s been featured on the Olmos singles “Antidote” and “Ooo La La.”

The single is the follow-up to the free-flowing “Diamonds,” released earlier this year, a track that revealed the artist’s more vulnerable side. If that first single was the milk, “Trip” is the shake.
