Hugs and kisses as we plunge into 2009

Not to get all People magazine on you, but the early part of 2009 seemed to be all about the love, and not just the Benjamin Gibbard-Zooey Deschanel variety.

First there was the Henry Clay People’s headlining set on New Year’s Eve at Spaceland. After leading up to the 12 o’clock countdown by covering the Airborne Toxic Event’s “Sometime Around Midnight” — wink, wink — THCP interrupted the set so that bassist Noah Green could propose to his girlfriend Natalie Milazzo. She said yes. Then brothers Joey and Andy Siara led the band in 90 minutes of rip-roaring covers, joined by as many 25 or 30 folks onstage. Yeah, it was festive.

(Aside: Did anybody have a slow New Year’s Eve? I talked to many people who hit the other myriad musical happenings, and all reported that they were crowded with revelers. What slow economy?)

By the way, the Henry Clays will soon announce big tour plans for February, although they will do so without Green and drummer Eric Scott, who were unable to commit to the tour. Filling in will be I Make This Sound’s Jonathan Price and Mike Hopkins; the new lineup will tune up Saturday when THCP supports the Afternoons at Spaceland.

Then on Saturday night at the newly all-dolled-up Jensen Rec Center in Echo Park, I witnessed Klipsinoza (as they called it) — the nuptials said by Earlimart frontman Aaron Espinoza and music manager Lisa Klipsic. A finer indie-rock wedding I have never seen. Among the guests were the frontpersons of two other local bands, who allowed as how they had just become engaged.

And thus concludes the TMZ/Silver Lake portion of Buzz Bands.
